My son got his new solterra about a month ago, and now that it's gotten super cold (-8 degrees!) the fan is so much louder than it was when we first got it. It's really noticeable, kind of a whirring sound. When I turn the heater off, it's totally quiet, so I'm guessing it's something to do with that. Is this just a normal EV thing, or should I be worried? Any ideas on how to make it quieter, or are we just stuck with it until winter's over?

The louder fan could be due to the cold affecting the HVAC system, it's normal in colder temperatures, but you could check the air filter or vents for blockages.

The noise you're hearing outside is probably the heat pump, not just the fan. When it gets cold, it has to work extra hard, kind of like it’s running a marathon in winter🏃‍♂️

The whirring sound you're hearing is normal in EVs during very cold weather. The car's heating system is working harder to keep the cabin and battery warm which causes the fans to run at higher speeds. It's not a malfunction just the car doing what it's designed to do. There's not much youcan do to reduce the noise as it's a result of the heating process. Pre-conditioning the car while it's plugged in might help a little but you'll likely have to deal with the noise until the weather gets warmer. Consider it the Solterra's way of battling the cold.
